Named for the great philosopher Epikouros (341–270 B.C.), well known for his exposition of the atomistic theory of physics, inspired by the teachings of Demokritos {see planet  (6129)}. He was also celebrated for his ethical teaching, to which we owe “epicurism“. Living in an age when the Greeks had lost their political freedom in Macedonia, Epikouros wanted to restore mental freedom by means of his physics to ensure “quietude of the mind“. (M 24765) _ _.
