Named for Robert P. Sharp, emeritus professor of geology at the California Institute of Technology. A leading American geomorphologist, Sharp is best known for his work on glaciers and the movement of desert sand. He played a prominent role in the interpretation of the surface features of Mars from images returned by early spacecraft missions. As chairman for 15 years he built the Division of Geological Sciences at Caltech into one of the finest research groups of its kind. (M 24917) _ _.
