Named in honor of the Oak Ridge Observatory, established in Harvard, Massachusetts, by the Harvard College Observatory in 1932 and since 1982 operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. This minor planet is one of the 39 discovered in the course of the Oak Ridge (also known for many years as the Agassiz Station) astrometric program, which has been conducted with the 1.5-m Wyeth reflector, the largest telescope in the eastern United States, for almost 20 years.
