Named in honor of Duncan Steel, Anglo-Australian astronomer who has conducted research on the origin and evolution of asteroids, comets and meteoroids. In particular, he has shown that several Apollo asteroids are the parents of meteor showers, indicating that these Apollos are likely to be extinct or moribund cometary nuclei. He has also worked extensively on radar observations of the meteoric influx to the atmosphere, planetary impact rates, and the dynamics of small solar system bodies. (M 17982) _ _.
