Named in memory of Sir Douglas Mawson (1882–1958), Australian geologist and Antarctic explorer. After graduating in engineering from the University of Sydney in 1902, Mawson gained valuable geological field experience on an expedition to the New Hebrides, returning to Sydney to take a geology degree in 1905. From that year onward he was associated with the University of Adelaide, being professor of geology from 1921 to 1952, making pioneering studies of uranium ores and, later, the Precambrian rocks of the Flinders Ranges. During 1907–1909 he took part in the British Antarctic Expedition led by Shackleton, and from 1911 to 1914 he led the Australasian Antarctic Expedition; on the latter was found the “Adelie Land” meteorite, the first to be discovered on the Antarctic continent. The Home of the Blizzard, his account of that expedition and his near-death, has become a classic. Throughout his career he promoted active... _ _.
