Stendhal (Marie-Henri Beyle, 1783--1842) was a original and complex French writer of the first half of the 19th century. Well-known for his masterpieces Le Rouge et le Noir (1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (1839), Honoré de Balzac considered him a genial novelist.
