Named for the first vestal virgin consecrated by the legendary Roman king Numa Pompilius, builder of the temple of Vesta {see planet  (4)}, in the eighth to seventh centuries B.C. This Amor object is the first V-Type (Vesta) asteroid known after (4) Vesta itself. It was under consideration for a flyby mission by the Clementine spacecraft in October 1995.
