Named for James Bradley (1693-1762), one of the greatest observers of his time and third Astronomer Royal, from 1742 until his death. Discoverer of aberration (1729) and nutation (1748), Bradley pioneered modern methods of determining instrumental effects on position measurements and published positions of some 3,000 stars with an accuracy never before attained.
