Thomas Harriot (1560-1621) is recognized as having made the first use of a telescope to record a celestial object with his drawing of the moon from Syon House, near London, on 1609 July 26 (O.S.), several months before Galileo. Better known as a mathematician, Harriot devised the < and > symbols.
