Canadian medical doctor Frederick G. Banting (1891-1941) in 1921 led a breakthrough in the treatment of diabetes when he discovered the role of a hormone controlling glucose levels in the pancreas. Soon the production of insulin transformed the former killer disease into a manageable illness.
