Francesco Bianchini (1662-1729), a catholic priest born in Verona, was esteemed by the popes, who assigned him to the project of calendar reform. He built a great sundial in Rome and he was a keen telescopic observer, with observations of the sun, Venus, Mars and Jupiter's satellites.
