In 1785 French navigator Jean-François Galoup, Comte de La Pérouse (1741-1788), sailed along the coast of South and North America and across the Pacific to China and Australia. In 1788, his ships L´Astrolabe and La Boussole vanished without a trace. The strait between Hokkaido and Sakhalin is named for him.
